Delightful Christmas show combines interesting stories and music
I discovered a fine short holiday treat with A Child’s Christmas in Wales. The show combines fine story telling with folk styles holiday music. Dylan Thomas’ The Power of Light, evoke the heart-warming spirit of the season. Rounding out the program are new stories written by artimeless classic, “A Child’s Christmas in Wales” summons memories of simpler holiday pleasures from the author’s childhood in his beloved Welsh seacoast village. Readings from Paul Auster’s “Auggie Wren’s Christmas Story” and Isaac Bashevis Singer’s Hanukkah Story “The Squire,” from his collection of teens in the Young Chicago Authors program in workshops with Remy Bumppo Artistic Associates.
Director Ed Sobel has selected three fine performers to covey the stories through smooth articulation. Annabel Armour, Shawn Douglas and Leonard House, Jr. delivered the warm, humorous holiday stories deftly. Susan Felder’s fine guitar and vocals added to the holiday spirit of this little gem of a show. This show covers the holidays from a Christian and Jewish traditions as well as voicing contemporary teen takes on Christmas. This is a ‘thinking person’s’ holiday show anchored by the brilliant Dylan Thomas story. It is so refreshing to hear Thomas’ rich language spoken by articulate performers. You’ll like this gem
