1890’s classic melodrama, “Margaret Fleming” smartly presented by Blackbird Theatre Company
James A. Herne’s shocking 1890 drama, “Margaret Fleming” was a ground breaking work that defied the Victorian values of American melodrama. Herne, know as ‘the American Ibsen,’ has penned a drama about a strong, independent woman (Margaret Felming) whose wealthy, secure family comes crashing down after she discovers that her young husband has cheated on her, fathering a child from his mistress. Herne paints a tranquil view of upper middle class life, circa 1890 that finds Philip Fleming (Danny Volk) running the family textile mill while Margaret takes care of the household and their infant daughter. The two are in love. Margaret is diagnosed with an eye disease that threatens her wellbeing.

Herne depicts the attitudes about immigrants—especially the Irish, the plight of the poor and the social hypocrisy of 1890 America. Director Ryan Washabaugh has mounted a stylish, fast paced 85 minute drama with a youngish but talented cast. Danny Volk as Phillip and Annie Hogan as Margaret each landed convincing performances. Aileen Rose Ruane as Mary needs work on her Irish brogue. Daniel Jackson as Dr. Larkin was terrific.
“Margaret Fleming” is a relatively unknown classic drama that still resonates today as we see how the strength and determination of Margaret wins over her troubles. I can’t say more without spoiling the story. This little gem is a fine play nicely performed. Kudos to the newbie’s from Blackbird Theatre Company for selecting this valid play.
