Stunning marionettes bring life to “the Scottish play”
Chicago Shakespeare, under the leadership of Barbara Gaines and Criss Henderson, have initiated the World’s Stage Series that brings to Chicago world class theatrical events. Direct from Milan, Italy, Carlo Colla e Figli’s Marionette Company has developed with Kate Buckley and CST a world premiere event—Marionette Macbeth. This amazing show features (for the first time) live actors speaking the script while the marionettes ‘perform’ Shakespeare’s Scottish play. The result is a marvelous and visually stunning event. Never will you see finer marionette work.

Monti Colla is the superb puppetry director who has the three-foot-tall marionettes dressed in period-perfect costumes and acting in uncanny realistic movements. We easily move from seeing marionettes to witnessing actors performing Shakespeare. With effective original music from Fabio Vacchi and colorful sets from Carlo III Colla, this show is eye candy for the soul

Shakespeare’s tragic tale of the Scottish Thane who murders his king is told by a excellent cast of classic actors. Martin Yurek, Christopher Kelly, Lisa Dodson, Joe Foust, Matt Penn, Jim Mezon and Neil Friedman deftly give voice to the marionettes. This works so well—you’d swear the marionettes were talking! This was, by far, the finest puppet show I’ve ever seen. It is so refreshing to see world class theatre troupe grace Chicago stages. This is a family friendly event—not a children only production. Kudos to CST for this ground breaking event.
