Lance Stuart Baker’s droll performance is amazing
Lance Stuart Baker (one of this reporter’s favorite actors) is brilliant in the sharp, black, tongue-in-cheek comedy where solid old fashion storytelling meets an absurdist tale. Baker is so subtle, so charming, yet so blandly cold that we are mesmerized and captivated by this strange piece. Thom Pain is unique, fresh and cynical. Baker’s deadpan style with vaguely moving looks and gestures spoken so soft yet so penetrating that we are on the edge of our seats in a wildly unpredictable show that defies explanation. Just go see Baker do his stuff, he’ll win your heart. You might want to look the other way when he asks for someone from the audience to join him on stage. Be warned. One man shows are difficult, but Baker’s so at home and relaxed that he seems to be doing a stream-of-conscious freeform dialogue. The wit exudes forth from Baker’s lips.
I can’t remember seeing such an intriguing clever theatrical piece. Will Eno’s style, illusions and metaphors are enhanced by Baker’s zany persona. Thom Pain reminds one of a long lost Addam’s Family member. This insanely funny and weird show is a gem.
