Energized by the success of last year’s The Many Faces of King Lear festival, we return to the Bard for Hamlet another tragedy steeped in the demands of family relationships and filial obligation. MichaelHalberstam, artistic director of Writers’ Theater, sets the stage for what has been called Shakespeare’s greatest play. We’ll follow his introduction with a series of lectures on topics ranging from “Freud, Hamlet, and the Presidential Candidates,” to the impact of director’s choices and the role of critical evaluation. Experience theDanish prince as portrayed by Laurence Olivier, Mel Gibson, and Ethan Hawke, and consider Hamlet’s influence on popular culture, from Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, to Julie Taymor’s The Lion King.
