The Nutcracker: A Quick Introduction

The Nutcracker is a ballet set to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Productions vary in character names, staging and setting, but most follow a child who receives a nutcracker on Christmas Eve and enters a dreamlike world of battle scenes, snow, sweets and dancing.

Which Nutcracker Should You See?

For a large professional production: Joffrey Ballet offers the most elaborate Chicago production and the strongest local thematic connection through its 1893 World’s Fair setting.

For a traditional Chicago institution: Ruth Page has one of the city’s longest-running Nutcracker traditions.

For younger children: Ruth Page’s under-one-hour Nutcracker Suite and North Shore School of Dance’s one-hour production are easier introductions than a full two-hour ballet.

For something visually different: A&A Ballet’s Art Deco version shifts the story into 1920s America.

For an alternative story: Ballet 5:8’s Beyond the Nutcracker uses Tchaikovsky’s score in a different narrative setting.

For suburban audiences: Salt Creek Ballet offers multiple venues across Chicagoland.

Nutcracker Performances for Kids

Ruth Page’s Nutcracker Suite runs under an hour, and North Shore School of Dance describes its production as approximately one hour. Full-length productions such as Joffrey and Ballet Chicago are closer to two hours and include an intermission.
