Chicago Equity Theatre Companies: A Guide to Professional Theatre

Chicago has one of the deepest professional theatre communities in the United States, ranging from major institutions and large musical-theatre houses to intimate ensemble companies. This guide highlights established Chicago and Chicago-area companies that regularly work with professional artists under Actors’ Equity Association agreements or other applicable Equity arrangements.
Equity status is not a measure of artistic quality. Chicago also has a major storefront and Non-Equity tradition that has produced exceptional theatre for decades. This article focuses specifically on professional companies that regularly work within the Equity system.
What Is an Equity Theatre?
Actors’ Equity Association is the labor union representing professional actors and stage managers in live theatre in the United States. A theatre company may employ Equity artists under one or more types of union agreements. That does not necessarily mean every production at a company operates under exactly the same contract or that the company should be treated as permanently “Equity” in every circumstance.
For that reason, this guide focuses on established professional companies that regularly work under applicable Equity arrangements rather than treating Equity as a simple quality label.
Chicago Theatre Companies
A Red Orchid Theatre
Location: Old Town, Chicago
Known for: Intimate ensemble-driven productions, contemporary drama and adventurous plays.

American Blues Theater
Location: Chicago
Known for: American stories, new work, ensemble performance and contemporary classics.

Black Ensemble Theater
Location: Uptown, Chicago
Known for: Music-driven productions, original work and biographical shows centered on influential artists and cultural history.

Chicago Children’s Theatre
Location: West Loop, Chicago

Chicago Shakespeare Theater
Location: Navy Pier, Chicago

Court Theatre

Goodman Theatre
Location: The Loop, Chicago

Lookingglass Theatre Company
Location: Water Tower Water Works, Chicago

Mercury Theater Chicago

Northlight Theatre

Shattered Globe Theatre

Teatro Vista

TimeLine Theatre Company
Location: 5035 N. Broadway, Uptown, Chicago
Known for: Historically informed plays that connect past events with contemporary issues.

The Artistic Home
Location: Chicago
Known for: Actor-centered ensemble work and intimate productions.

The Artistic Home has long been associated with rigorous ensemble acting. Because contract arrangements can vary by production, readers should check current production and Equity information rather than assuming every performance operates under the same agreement.
Chicago-Area Theatre Companies Outside the City
Several major professional companies closely associated with the Chicago theatre community are outside Chicago city limits. They belong in a broader Chicago-area guide, but visitors should know that they require travel beyond the city.
Drury Lane Theatre
Location: Oakbrook Terrace
Known for: Large-scale musicals and polished commercial productions.

Marriott Theatre
Location: Lincolnshire

Writers Theatre
Location: Glencoe
Known for: New plays, classics and literary, actor-centered productions.

How Companies Were Included
This guide focuses on established Chicago and Chicago-area professional companies with ongoing seasons and regular work under applicable Actors’ Equity arrangements. Because union agreements and production structures can vary, inclusion should not be read as a claim that every production at every company uses the same Equity contract.
Likewise, exclusion from this guide does not imply lower artistic quality. Chicago’s Non-Equity and storefront theatres are an essential part of the city’s theatre ecosystem.
Choosing a Chicago Theatre
If you want large musicals, start with companies such as Paramount, Marriott, Drury Lane, Mercury or Porchlight. For major resident-theatre productions and new work, Goodman and Steppenwolf are natural starting points. For classics and literary work, Court, Chicago Shakespeare and Writers Theatre are especially relevant. For intimate ensemble work, look at A Red Orchid, Remy Bumppo, Shattered Globe and The Artistic Home. For visually inventive work, Lookingglass has a particularly distinctive identity.
