Free Museum Days in Chicago (2026 Guide)
Chicago is home to world-class museums, and you don’t always have to pay full admission to visit them. Throughout the year, museums across the city offer free days and evenings for Illinois residents, while several Chicago museums are free for everyone year-round.
This guide covers free museum days in Chicago for 2026, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Field Museum, Adler Planetarium, Museum of Contemporary Art, Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, Shedd Aquarium and more. Before You Go
Free admission is not the same as a free outing. Read this once, then jump to the museum you care about.
- Illinois residency ID: Most free days require a valid Illinois driver’s license, state ID, or other proof of residency (student ID with photo, utility bill + photo ID, Chicago CityKey where accepted). Online systems often verify by ZIP code at checkout—then staff still check ID at the door.
- Timed tickets still matter: “Free” rarely means walk-up. Field Free Wednesdays, Shedd free hours, Adler discount days, Griffin MSI free days, Notebaert free days, and Obama Tuesday free tickets all push advance reservations.
- Online convenience fees: Shedd charges a $5 convenience fee per online Free Hours order, including its Tuesday free nights (Sep. 29–Dec. 15); reserving by phone at 312-939-2438 avoids the fee. Policies change—confirm when you book.
- Special exhibits, films, Dome, U-505, planetarium shows, Butterfly Haven: Almost never included in free general admission.
- Parking: Rarely free. Northwestern’s Block Museum is a notable free-parking exception; Museum Campus lots are park-district managed and pricey on event days.
- Out-of-state visitors: Lean on always-free museums, Museums for All if eligible, Bank of America Museums on Us if you hold an eligible card, and paid tickets—Illinois free days will not apply.

These museums offer free general admission year-round, making them the easiest options for residents and visitors who don’t want to plan around a free-day calendar.
National Museum of Mexican Art (Pilsen)
Admission: Always free. Where: 1852 W. 19th St. Late Wednesdays (first Wednesday of the month) run until 8 p.m. Confirm hours on the NMMA visit page.
Smart Museum of Art (Hyde Park / UChicago)
Admission: Free. Strong teaching-museum collection and rotating shows on the University of Chicago campus. Check current hours at smartmuseum.uchicago.edu/visit.
Block Museum of Art (Evanston / Northwestern)

Museum of Contemporary Photography (South Loop)

Jane Addams Hull-House Museum (UIC / Near West Side)
Admission: Always free. Historic settlement-house galleries; check open days (typically closed Sunday–Monday). hullhouse.uic.edu.
National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture (Humboldt Park)
Admission: Free. Landmark Receptory building at 3015 W. Division St.; on-site parking listed as free (first come). nmprac.org/visit.

Illinois Resident Free Days & Nights
These are the free days most visitors are looking for. The schedules below were checked against official museum pages on September 25, 2026. Where a museum hasn’t posted its remaining 2026 dates, or a seasonal window has closed, we say so.
Art Institute of Chicago
Illinois free hours: Third Thursdays, 5:00–8:00 p.m., beginning April 16, 2026 (ongoing).
Free Summer Thursdays: June 11–September 17, 2026, 5:00–8:00 p.m. — this seasonal window has ended. Do not plan around “every Thursday” summer evenings for the rest of 2026; use Third Thursdays plus the everyday free categories below.
Always free (no advance ticket required for the benefit itself): kids under 14; Chicago teens under 18; LINK and WIC cardholders (Museums for All—includes ticketed special exhibitions); Illinois educators with voucher/ID; active-duty military (Blue Star rules apply seasonally for households). University and corporate partners as listed on site.

Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago
Illinois free nights: Tuesdays, 5–9 p.m. Anyone 18 and under is free every day (Lefkofsky Fund). Museums for All: suggested $3 for up to six with LINK. Pay-what-you-can options exist in person. Official: mcachicago.org/Visit.
Field Museum
Illinois Free Wednesdays: Illinois residents get free general admission Wednesdays. Advance online reservations highly recommended; onsite tickets available on a space available basis. Your mobile ticket serves as proof of residence. Extras include ticketed exhibitions and 3D films. Museums for All: $3 per person for up to six with EBT/WIC (in person). Shedd Aquarium
Illinois residents get full exhibit access (including seasonal Stingray Touch when available) on select free days and free nights at Shedd. For the rest of 2026, Illinois resident free nights run Tuesdays, 5–9 p.m.: September 29; October 6, 13, 20 and 27; November 3, 10, 17 and 24; and December 1, 8 and 15. Winter free-day blocks have historically opened in January–February.
What to do: Check Shedd’s Illinois Resident Free Hours page to reserve. Expect timed tickets, capacity limits, and a $5 online convenience fee per order (no fee when you reserve by phone at 312-939-2438). Bring Illinois ID.
Adler Planetarium
Illinois Resident Discount Days: Illinois residents get in for free on certain dates. Official upcoming list as of verification: October 1, 26, 27, 28; November 9, 10, 16, 17, 18 (the September clusters of 8–10 and 14–16 have passed). Reserve online, use your ZIP as promo code; bring proof of residency. Not included: sky shows. Add separately. Official: adlerplanetarium.org/tickets.
Griffin Museum of Science and Industry
Illinois Free Days (free general admission; Dome, U-505, Coal Mine, and special exhibitions extra). Official upcoming dates posted on the pricing page:

Chicago History Museum
Illinois resident free days posted on the visit page for late 2026 include October 8, 12 and November 11, 19 (earlier August–September dates on that same list have passed). Illinois residents 18 and under receive free admission year-round with proof of residency. Museums for All: $3 with EBT (limits apply). Official: chicagohistory.org/visit.
DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center
Free admission on Wednesdays. Free for military and first responders with valid ID. Separate always-free categories include Illinois public school students (K–12), University of Chicago students and others listed on site. Confirm timed-entry practices when you reserve: dusablemuseum.org/visitor.
Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum
Not free every Thursday. The museum eliminated Thursday free admission on a weekly basis in January 2026 and now offers 52 Illinois Resident Free Days throughout the year. Basic admission is free; Judy Istock Butterfly Haven is $5 extra.

Obama Presidential Center Museum
Illinois Free Days: Free general admission for Illinois residents Tuesday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Capacity limits remain in effect — book reserved timed tickets online (ZIP at checkout) and bring Illinois driver’s license, state ID, Chicago CityKey, or alternate residency documents listed by the Foundation. Illinois Holocaust Museum — Experience360 (downtown)
Experience360 is at 360 N. State St. while the Skokie campus is closed for renovations. Free Days return the last Wednesday of each month (next listed at verification: September 30). Bank of America Museums on Us
When: First full weekend of every month. Next weekend after verification: Saturday–Sunday, October 3–4, 2026 (confirmed on Bank of America’s Museums on Us page).
Show an active Bank of America, Merrill or Bank of America Private Bank credit or debit card and corresponding government photo ID for one free general admission per cardholder. Special exhibitions are usually charged separately. Offer does not guarantee entry during busy weekends.

Chicago Public Library — Explore More Illinois digital passes
Museum passes are digital and expanded statewide through RAILS Explore More Illinois, as of CPL’s June 1, 2026 announcement. Adult Chicago residents with a physical CPL card in good standing reserve online—no branch pickup/return, no late fees. There are many attractions, with the Art Institute as an explicit partner.

Museums for All (LINK / EBT / WIC)
Many Chicago museums offer deep discounts or free admission to SNAP/LINK and WIC cardholders, though rules vary by institution. High-value examples: Art Institute (free general admission, ticketed special exhibitions for the household); Field Museum ($3 for up to six); MCA ($3 suggested for up to six); Adler ($1 museum entry for up to six); Griffin MSI (free GA, including Anne Frank exhibition per site); Chicago History Museum ($3); Illinois Holocaust Museum Experience360 (free for cardholder + up to three guests). Always show the card with photo ID, and ask what is included that day.
Pair with a Show

- Loop / Michigan Avenue: Art Institute Third Thursday or Cultural Center afternoon → evening in the Loop (Goodman, Nederlander corridor, Broadway in Chicago houses). MoCP is a short walk from Grant Park stages and Symphony Center.
- Museum Campus: Field Free Wednesday or Adler Illinois free date → night performances downtown via Roosevelt CTA/Metra; leave extra time for lakefront traffic and parking.
- Streeterville / Near North: MCA Tuesday free night (5–9 p.m.) pairs with late dinners and Near North / Off-Loop companies—arrive early; Tuesday nights fill.
- Hyde Park: Smart Museum, Griffin MSI free day, DuSable Wednesday, or Obama Tuesday → Logan Center (also a Chicago International Film Festival venue, Oct. 14–25) and campus performance calendars the same evening.

Is the Art Institute of Chicago free?
Not every day for adults. Illinois residents get free hours on Third Thursdays (5–8 p.m.). Free Summer Thursdays ran through September 17, 2026, and have ended. Kids under 14 and Chicago teens under 18 are free daily; LINK/WIC, educators, and other listed groups also qualify. See AIC free admission.
When is the Field Museum free?
Illinois residents: every Wednesday (Illinois Free Wednesdays), general admission. Reserve ahead when you can; special exhibitions and 3D films cost extra.
Do I still need tickets if admission is free?
Usually yes for major institutions. Free days are capacity-managed. Walk-ups are unreliable at Shedd, Adler, Field Free Wednesdays, Griffin MSI, Notebaert, and Obama Tuesdays.
Does free admission include special exhibits?
Almost never—except where a program explicitly says so (Art Institute Museums for All is a notable exception that includes ticketed special exhibitions). Dome films, U-505, planetarium shows, and Butterfly Haven are typically add-ons.
Is parking free on free days?
No. Expect paid garages and Museum Campus lots. Block Museum’s free parking is an outlier worth celebrating.
How does Bank of America Museums on Us work?
First full weekend each month (next: October 3–4, 2026). One free general admission per eligible Bank of America / Merrill / Private Bank cardholder with matching photo ID. Check participating venues on Bank of America’s Museums on Us map.
How do Chicago Public Library museum passes work now?
They are digital Explore More Illinois passes. Adult Chicago residents with a physical CPL card reserve at chipublib.org/digitalpasses for a specific date—no physical pass to return.
I’m visiting from out of state—what’s actually free?
Always-free museums (NMMA, Smart, Block, MoCP, Cultural Center, Hull-House, NMPRAC, and others), Museums for All if you hold qualifying EBT/WIC from any state (where accepted), Museums on Us if you have an eligible Bank of America card, and paid admission everywhere else. Illinois resident free days will not unlock Field Wednesdays or MCA Tuesday nights for you.
