Cheap Chicago Theatre Tickets: Rush, Lotteries & Discounts

Hot Tix is still the first place most of us check when we want cheap Chicago theatre tickets. It’s run by the League of Chicago Theatres, and right now their fall “It’s Theatre Season” promotion is the best single deal in town: buy one, get one half off on select shows with the code SEASON at hottix.org.

This guide covers the programs that actually work in 2026 — Hot Tix, day-of rush, student deals, and the annual Theatre Week window — with the practical details (fees, limits, will-call rules) that most roundups skip. Last verified: October 10, 2026. Programs and inventory change; always confirm on the official site before you go.

Prices, eligibility, and availability change. Confirm on the theatre’s site or Hot Tix before buying. Rush and lottery seats are often side, rear, or partial-view.

1. Hot Tix (start here)

Hot Tix remains the most reliable single source for discounted Chicago theatre tickets. It covers a wide range of local companies — not just the big Loop houses — and tickets are often available days or weeks ahead, not only day-of.

For fall 2026 the League’s It’s Theatre Season promotion is active: buy one, get one half off on select performances using code SEASON at hottix.org. The window runs roughly early October into early December for participating shows. Inventory is limited and not every production is included.

Browse HotTix.org or call 312-977-9483. Check our current shows guide to see what’s playing, then cross-reference with Hot Tix.

2. Broadway In Chicago rush and lottery

Broadway In Chicago offers $49 day-of rush tickets for select touring shows. Availability and rules vary by production — some are box-office only, some digital. Not every show offers rush every day, and seats are often whatever is left (side or rear more common than center orchestra).

They also run a digital lottery for some productions (typically $30 tickets, limited quantity, max two per winner). Entries usually open the day before. Check the individual show page or the Broadway In Chicago lottery page for current rules.

For the venues themselves, see our Chicago theatre district guide.

3. Steppenwolf, Goodman, and other company programs

Steppenwolf: The 20 for $20 program releases $20 tickets for main-series performances. Use code 20FOR20 online (available in advance until sold out; often limited to two per person) or call the box office at 312-335-1650 at noon on the day of the show. Under-30 patrons can also look at the RED Card program. We’ve used the noon phone call successfully when the online allotment is gone — have the show and performance ready when you dial.

Goodman Theatre: Mezztix are half-price mezzanine seats released at 10 a.m. on the day of the performance with code MEZZTIX. College students can get $20 tickets through 20TIX (code 20TIX); student ID is required at will-call and fees still apply. Rules differ slightly between the Albert and Owen theatres.

Lyric Opera: The NEXT program offers roughly $25 all-inclusive tickets for full-time college students on select performances. You sign up for free to receive the promo code. Reduced-price tickets for children are also available at many performances, but inventory is limited.

Other companies run their own rush, student, or under-30 deals. Always check the production page. Our Chicago holiday shows guide notes seasonal pricing where relevant.

4. Chicago Theatre Week

Chicago Theatre Week (usually February) is the single best citywide opportunity for cheap tickets. Participating shows offer $15 or $30 (sometimes lower) seats through Hot Tix. Allotments are limited and popular titles sell out quickly. Dates for 2027 have not been announced yet; watch the League of Chicago Theatres site or Hot Tix closer to the date.

Practical notes and friction

  • Fees are common. A $20 face-value ticket can end up higher once handling fees are added. Compare the final price.
  • Student and some discount tickets require ID at will-call. Bring it.
  • Rush, lottery, and day-of seats are often side, rear, or partial-view. That’s normal for these prices.
  • Inventory is limited. Popular shows (especially weekend evenings) sell out the cheap allotments fast.
  • Buying in person at the box office can sometimes avoid online fees, but it is not always cheaper once you factor in time and parking. Compare first.
  • Have a backup show in mind if you’re downtown and the first choice is gone. Hot Tix and smaller companies are useful fallbacks.

Editor’s note — mid-October 2026

Right now the SEASON code on Hot Tix is the clearest short-term win for most people. If you’re flexible, also look at Steppenwolf’s 20FOR20 (the noon call still works) and Goodman’s Mezztix if you can be online at 10 a.m. Student deals at Goodman and Lyric remain strong if you qualify. Check our shows now playing page for specific titles that currently have decent discount inventory, and read the linked reviews before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy half-price or discounted theatre tickets in Chicago?

Start with Hot Tix (hottix.org). Not every ticket is half price, but it is the broadest source of discounted seats for local companies. The current SEASON code adds a buy-one-get-one-half-off offer on select shows.

Does Broadway In Chicago offer rush tickets?

Yes for select touring shows — typically $49 day-of. Rules vary by production. Check the specific show page. Seats are limited and often not the best in the house.

How do the lotteries work?

Broadway In Chicago runs a digital lottery for some shows (usually $30 tickets, limited quantity, max two per winner). Entries generally open the day before. Winning gives you the chance to buy the tickets; it is not free admission.

Can I get cheap tickets the same day?

Yes. Hot Tix often has same-day options, Broadway In Chicago has $49 rush on select shows, Steppenwolf releases $20 tickets by phone at noon, and Goodman releases half-price mezzanine seats at 10 a.m. Inventory is limited.

What’s the best option for students?

Goodman’s 20TIX ($20, student ID required) and Lyric’s NEXT program (~$25 all-inclusive on select performances, free signup) are among the strongest. Steppenwolf also has student pricing. Bring ID.

Are weekday performances cheaper?

Often yes, both on regular pricing and on discount allotments. Weeknights and matinees are usually easier to score cheap seats for than Saturday nights.

Final note

The combination that works for most people is Hot Tix first (especially during the SEASON promo), then the company-specific day-of programs if you’re flexible on the day. Student and under-30 deals are worth the extra step if you qualify. For what’s actually on stage right now, see our Chicago shows now playing guide and the linked reviews.
