Boleros for the Disenchanted, by José Rivera, who wrote the screenplay for Motorcycle Diaries, is a sentimental tale. It recounts the story of a Puerto Rican couple – Flora (Elizabeth Ledo/Sandra Marquez) and Eusebio (Joe Minoso/René Rivera) who met on the island in 1953 and married the following year. It is a personal story told across years of marriage, but it is also the story of the suffering of all Puerto Ricans forced to flee their land in search of work and dignity. Like so many, fortune escapes the young couple. They pay with the loss of their community, their family and even their own identity, but in the end, the get little.

This isn’t to say that Boleros for the Disenchanted is all about sadness and suffering. On the contrary, it is probably the humor that you will remember because the couple is together for almost 40 years of marriage in the Bronx and has nine kids. That can’t happen without humor. They stick together confronting their bittersweet lives right up until the end. We only see them at the beginning of their relationship (Act I) and in the final chapter (Act II) that takes place in Alabama near a military base where one of their sons had been stationed before shipping out to Germany. With only these few moments extracted from so many years of marriage, the playwright manages to let us get to know Flora and Eusebio and they touch our hearts because their experience is emblematic of the Puerto Rican immigration experience in particular and of the reality of immigration in general. The power of the work comes from the compactness of its words that capture so much living in so little space and from the authenticity of its message.

All in all, Boleros for the Disenchanted is a lively presentation with a lot of rich humor that is distinctly Latino in flavor. Director Henry Godinez brings a rapid pace to the work and its two and a half hours go by as though they were only an instant. Linda Buchanan’s beautiful set transports the audience to the tropical “bohío” of Miraflores in a way that will make the islanders among you suffer when it converts into the sad little Alabama apartment of the second act. Perhaps the acting isn’t even across the board – especially I didn’t feel any chemistry between the young Flora and Eusebio – but it’s impossible that you won’t like this show.
