December in Chicago theater is mostly holiday shows, and that’s fine: some of them are very good. But the month also has a few serious plays finishing their runs and some musicals that have nothing to do with Christmas. Here is what is worth your evenings, starting with the five that define the month, plus the family shows and one-night events that fill out the calendar.

The five that define the month
- The Nutcracker
The Joffrey Ballet, Lyric Opera House
December 4–27, 2026
Christopher Wheeldon’s Chicago-set version moves the story to the 1893 World’s Fair. It is the city’s biggest holiday dance ticket, and prime weekend seats go first. (For comparison, see our review of the 2016 premiere production.)
Tickets: Joffrey Ballet
- A Christmas Carol
Goodman Theatre, Albert Theatre
November 13–December 31, 2026
Tom Creamer’s adaptation, directed by Malkia Stampley, with Tim Hopper debuting as Scrooge (Kareem Bandealy alternates). The accessible performances are ASL-interpreted on Dec. 4, audio-described with a touch tour on Dec. 5, and Spanish-subtitled and open-captioned on Dec. 6. A sensory-friendly matinee is on Dec. 27. Children under 5 are not admitted. (For comparison, see our review of an earlier Goodman edition from 2014.)
