Why Do You Always Wear Black?

The Organic Theater Company presents a world premiere of “Why Do You Always Wear Black?” directed by Anna He Gelman.

The Organic is committed to staging bold, relevant productions of classic, contemporary, and adapted works with a permanent group of artists over a sustained period of time. We return to the Greenhouse Theater Center this March for a very special presentation. From March 21 through April 8 we bring to the stage the World Premiere of WHY DO YOU ALWAYS WEAR BLACK? directed by Anna Gelman and devised with an ensemble cast.

This is an original work featuring the women of Anton Chekhov’s plays who confront the joy, despair, and absurdity of being a woman in 19th century Russia as well as contemporary America. This innovative, theatrical work weaves together Chekhov’s world and our own modern backwardness, with a healthy dose of radical feminism and sock puppets.

The piece will compare the societal roles of women in the 19th century with their roles today, and explore the notion that even though Chekhov’s characters are some of the greatest roles ever written for women, they still contain the sexism and misogyny of their time… and ours.
